This was a small, but very interesting, project to undertake. While digitising Chartwell House’s visitor book inside and out, we were asked to work onsite so that the artefact did not have to leave the premises.
This project really goes to show how useful digitisation can be, and was a really good idea from the National Trust team at Chartwell. The digitised book is going to be made into an interactive exhibit at Chartwell House: visitors to the museum will be able to view the book in a ‘turning the page’ style from cover to cover. The signatures it contains (including those of Charlie Chaplin and the Deputy Prime Minister of Japan, as well as various Churchill family members) will be tagged with metadata so that information about the individual and their visit to Chartwell will be displayed when the signature is touched.
